  • estimating the cost of policy changes for the Chancellor's Budgets
  • building statistical learning models to understand taxpayer compliance

In your role, you will have access to some of the richest data sources available in the UK and work collaboratively across teams and government departments to produce high quality analysis.

There is no requirement to have prior experience or knowledge of tax and we welcome candidates pursuing a career change. These roles do not normally involve line management, though you will have opportunities to mentor and upskill junior analysts in your team.

Leadership and collaborative working

You will lead on your own portfolio of analytical projects. You will manage relationships with a range of stakeholders, which could include colleagues in departments like Treasury and Department for Work and Pensions, or compliance officers in operational parts of HMRC. You will work in collaboration with other team members to design and conduct analysis and present this to key stakeholders.

Influence and impact

Our Senior Statistical Analysts have opportunities to drive forward high profile and high impact work. From improving the usability of official statistics publications using data science techniques, to submitting policy costings, you will have considerable scope to lead and influence tangible changes.

You will have the opportunity to test and utilise various data sources, analytical techniques including data science methods, and dissemination tools.

Responsibilities

You will work on a breadth of projects that will require you to:

  • build new data solutions through the manipulation of multiple data sources to meet customer needs
  • proactively engage with our customers to share analytical results, taking data limitations into account
  • build effective relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to influence decision making
  • manage projects across multiple workstreams - delivering and championing robust project management and quality assurance
  • think creatively and innovatively to help us test and develop new ideas and analytical techniques
  • support the development and upskilling of junior analysts

Essential criteria

  • You will need to meet the entry requirements for the Government Statistical Group (GSG). Please see the Qualifications section for details.
  • Experience of prioritising tasks in line with broader objectives (Seeing the Big Picture)
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate to improve the quality or efficiency of processes (Changing and Improving)
  • Experience of using a range of relevant and credible information to support decision making (Making Effective Decisions)
  • Strong analytical experience, including a track record in the practical application of analysis or research with an in depth knowledge of data sources (GSG competencies: Acquiring data/Understanding customer needs; Data analysis)
  • Ability to communicate complex analysis to non-specialists and contribute effectively to discussions with ministers, senior officials, and external stakeholders (GSG competency: Presenting and disseminating data effectively)

Team members that are moving offices as a result of the Locations Programme will be entitled to a Moves Adjustment Payment for three years where they incur additional costs. This is calculated based on the difference between the costs of travelling to and from the new and old office, over a weekly period. You will get more detail on this as part of targeted locations move communications.
