HMRC is building a modern, digital tax administration and runs the biggest digital operation in Government, providing services for 45 million individuals and 4.9 million business customers. Our digital programme is multi-award winning and the envy of other government organisations!

Data Platform Services (DPS), within the Chief Digital and Information Officer group (CDIO) function, designs, builds and operates the data foundations for all of HMRC's services at a size and scale larger than most other organisations. The team is leading a major transformation programme encompassing technology, capabilities and data services whilst continuing to deliver high quality and robust services to our internal and external customers.

We are looking for people who have a strong interest in Technology, we will build your capability via formal accreditation training that will be consolidated via situation learning within our delivery teams.

Job Description

Our team builds and operates all HMRC's data platforms and a wide variety of advanced data products and services and is accountable for the secure movement, persistence and use of a large, diverse collection of government and 3rd party data.

We are moving all data into a hybrid cloud environment, building and migrating to a range of data lakes and data warehouses. But it's not just about the technology; we need the best people to lead this transformation, working in agile ways, continuously delivering value for our internal and external customers.

In this role, you will be expected to attend a blended learning approach for up to an 18 month duration, once the formal training has been completed you will join one of our agile delivery teams permanently.

Some of the main responsibilities expected of this role are:

You will be responsible for your own development within the Data Engineering Academy, identifying learning opportunities and being proactive in ensuring you are working towards an independent way of working. You will be responsible for understanding the Department's Data Strategy and Data Security policy, ensuring that the work you produce is compliant.

Responsibilities

Essential Skills:

Demonstrable experience in one or more of the following is essential:

  • A general interest and aptitude for IT or Tech - full training and mentor program will be undertaken
  • Working with stakeholders across a variety of business areas to maintain open and effective communication channels
  • Grasping complex problems, with the ability to problem solve and produce options for resolution

Desirable experience/qualifications:

Demonstrable experience in one or more of the following is desirable:

  • Experience with analysing a set of data
  • Working with a data modelling tool
  • Working with a data transformation tool
  • Knowledge of computer programming languages
  • Experience with having written queries against a database is beneficial
  • Experience and involvement in creatively designing an IT application is desirable
  • Knowledge of data transportation techniques is an advantage (such as flat files, XML, data pump, APIs etc)
  • Knowledge of data warehousing
  • Knowledge of data analytics and business intelligence
  • Understanding of Data Security

Team members that are moving offices as a result of the Locations Programme will be entitled to a Moves Adjustment Payment for three years where they incur additional costs. This is calculated based on the difference between the costs of travelling to and from the new and old office, over a weekly period. You will get more detail on this as part of targeted locations move communications.
