About us

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) is tasked with protecting British people and interests wherever they are in the world. We have a global reach that takes us to every continent. Around the world, 14,000 of our people embedded in 270 diplomatic embassies, and our highly skilled workforce are involved in everything from supporting those who are trapped in conflict zones, to supporting projects in other countries around the world that will ultimately create business platforms for the UK. As such, the opportunities we can offer our people are unparalleled.

We’re looking for two Open Source Intelligence Analysts to provide high-impact reporting on Eastern European issues, and help the Open Source Unit (OSU) develop new tools and methods to expand our capability to analyse openly available data.

The role

This is your chance to play a significant role in a team that is growing in prominence and influence across UK Government and our international partners. Working within the National Security Directorate (NSD), you will be a part of the growing Open Source Unit (OSU) – a team who are developing techniques that will advance government policy. This includes shaping policy on disinformation and liaising with international partners to support understanding of, and resilience to, potentially hostile information operations.

Every day you will be presented with interesting opportunities – anything from key policy issues to crisis management and international engagement. Day-to-day, you will use cutting-edge tools and approaches to collect and analyse open source information, reporting on information flows, assessing media narratives and helping us to understand how this resulting information could impact on foreign policy. Presenting your findings in verbal and written formats, you will ensure that the information has the desired impact. As you will be producing reports on key Eastern European issues, we will look to you to help us shape new tools and methods that will allow us to analyse openly available data. Ultimately, your analyses will help policy owners decide on what steps they need to take to ensure the UK’s ongoing safety and success.

About you

This is an important role and you will need strong analytical and reporting skills to do it successfully. We are looking for someone capable of handling large data sets, with knowledge of big data techniques and open source information. As well as being able to analyse large amounts of information, you will be able to convey your findings clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

As someone who enjoys sharing ideas and solving problems with multidisciplinary colleagues, you will be calm under pressure. It is also essential that you are capable of managing your own workload, and that you can prioritise tasks accordingly – all backed up by comprehensive computer skills with the capacity to learn and embrace tools such as Boolean strings and simple SQL search expressions.

Company

We pursue our national interests and project the UK as a force for good in the world. We promote the interests of British citizens, safeguard the UK’s security, defend our values, reduce poverty and tackle global challenges with our international partners.
